The Better Nights

Poems

  • Celebrating the author's 80th birthday in 2026
  • A poetic inventory of a life and a map of memories
  • Reflects on travel, love, and the ravages of war

In his new collection, poet Joachim Sartorius asks if the nights when a poem succeeds are truly the better nights, taking stock of his life through verse.

The poems serve as journeys through a Mediterranean world that is both real and mythical, visiting places like Sicily, Tunis, and the Levant. At the center of the volume are four poems addressing current wars, contrasting destruction with the enduring power of touch, warmth, and the sea. It is a book about what passes and what remains.
