His fourth case leads Léon Duval to the world of street vendors in Cannes. An African man is found dead on Bijou Plage, one of the city’s most beautiful beaches. Is there a connection to the refugees waiting at the border to Italy, who keep trying to make it to France in homemade boats? Or is it something else entirely? Because it turns out that the dead man is a street vendor from Senegal. The city is full of them, hawking their goods to tourists on the beaches and streets. But who could want to murder a poor peddler? Duval quickly recognizes that there is more to this story than meets the eye. Especially when another dead body turns up. And then his girlfriend, the journalist Annie, who was really just supposed to be in Cannes from the mountains for a few days of vacation, also starts investigating – to Duval’s and his colleagues’ annoyance.
