“Der Mäusetöter” isn’t just a collection of extremely entertaining stories – it’s also Mario Adorf’s most personal book, full of autobiographical episodes and memories of his childhood in the Eifel region during the Nazi era, his adolescence and university days after the war and his beginnings as an actor. In the end, the fact that in many of his tales the narrator himself doesn’t exactly come out as the shining winner, deserving of praise, not only lends these stories their charm but also gives the book its subtitle: “Unrühmliche Geschichten” – “Inglorious Stories.”
