Everything in the small French city Banyuls-sur-Mer, just a few miles from the Spanish border, could be so easy if only that damn tramontane wind blowing down from the Pyrenees didn’t make people so crazy.

Perez, a small-time crook and amateur detective, would love to run his restaurant and thriving black market in Spanish delicacies in peace. But then the new police chief from the north reports for duty in Banyuls, and a stately yacht explodes near the beach. No trace of the crew. When, on top of this, Perez’s girlfriend Marianne – who, earlier, had demonstrated against the planned expansion of the harbor using unorthodox means – disappears without a trace, Perez suspects that something fishy is afoot on the Côte Vermeille.

Together with Marianne’s daughter and his cook, Haziem, he begins his investigation, discovering quite a bit about powerful corporations and corrupt puppet masters in the process. When he himself then comes under suspicion of murder, Perez has had enough once and for all…
