A light-hearted case for shopping abstinence
For many it would be the worst punishment imaginable. But Nunu Kaller is doing it of her own will: a one-year shopping boycott. One year without new clothing, shoes, jewelry or handbags. But also a year full of new styling ideas, of do-it-yourself fun – not to mention, all kinds of new energy for life.
In Nothing For Me, Thanks! Nunu Kaller describes the highs and lows of her personal experiment – with wit and without pointing the finger. She tells of moments when she felt tempted by the billboard jungle that characterizes our culture of “Sale! Bargain! Everything must go!”, of fun times at clothing swaps and battles with “Mount McLaundry”, of joy and frustration with knitting needles and a sewing machine. And she goes on the hunt for alternatives to the social and ecological insanity of shopping at the big retail chains.
Of course, at the end of the year she’ll start shopping again – and gladly at that. But she’ll do so with more awareness and with a clearer conscience.
