The face as the window to the soul – is this still valid in the age of constant self-optimization?
Never before in the history of humankind have our own faces been as omnipresent as they are today. Whether in photographs, film footage, video chats, or in the mirror – we are constantly seeing ourselves. But what is this doing to us? Did our ancestors, who were confronted with their own image much less often, live more unselfconsciously? Does facing ourselves non-stop help us to know ourselves better?
Journalists Luzia Braun and Ursula März met with 19 people who think about the face from different angles – as a boxer or influencer, fashion designer or dermatologist, twin or transgender person, philosopher or mortician, writer or someone whose face has undergone a radical change. With rich life and career experiences, these individuals talk very openly and wisely about our most important means of expression and what “seeing yourself” means to them.
